Facebook passes Google? [STATS]

According to the analysts at Hitwise, social networks in general are more popular than search engines in some parts of the world.

In fact, networks such as Facebook have been pushing hard against the biggest names in web search, including Google, for several months now. As Hitwise reported recently, Facebook’s overall web traffic pulled ahead of Google’s for the first time in the U.S. in March of this year.

Pay Per Post: Google Uses Every Trick To Beat Yahoo In Japan

logo_google_japanGoogle is undoubtedly the dominant search engine globally, but in a few countries such as Korea (Naver), Russia (Yandex) or Japan, local competitors are winning. Especially Japan, the country with the world’s third biggest Internet population (about 100 million people are online), still seems to be a tough nut to crack for Google.

Nielsen Japan reports that in October 2008, Yahoo Search saw a total of over 3.5 billion page views, while No. 2 Google trailed with 2.6 billion page views. According to a Comscore Japan ranking released in September 2008, Yahoo ruled the Japanese search engine market with a share of 51.2% (Google reached 39.0% in that month).

Doodle 4 Google – Population Control

Doodle 4 Google is a competition open to school kids, giving them an opportunity to design a Google logo. The theme for the competition is “What I wish for the World.”

So I did my own crude Google doodle in Photoshop expressing what I wish for the world!

doodle population-control

What I wish for the world is some kind of radical population control as we’re a disease killing our host (what happens to a disease when the host dies?). So I have a ban on fertile sperm, the pill and a condom pictured in my Google logo.

Kids, don’t be influenced by my Google doodle as it’s crude on a few levels and people don’t like being told to stop breeding, so you wouldn’t win the competition.

Schools and students can find more information on the doodle for Google competition here.
